As US Abortion Ban Areas Expand... Clinics Open Near Border in Mexico
[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] As regions in the United States ban abortion, the world's largest maternal health organization has begun establishing clinics in Mexican cities bordering the U.S.
According to foreign media including EFE on the 23rd (local time), Marie Stopes International (MSI) Mexico branch recently opened its first clinic in Tijuana, Baja California, near the U.S. border. MSI is an NGO supporting contraception and abortion for women in 37 countries worldwide.
The clinic is located about 10 km from the San Ysidro border crossing in San Diego, U.S. MSI stated that the facility was made possible thanks to Baja California's law revision last October allowing abortion for any reason up to 12 weeks of pregnancy.
In September last year, the Mexican Supreme Court unanimously ruled that punishing abortion is unconstitutional. MSI announced that "the Tijuana clinic is prepared to serve women of all nationalities" and plans to support abortion for women affected by the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision to overturn abortion rights.
In the U.S., since the overturning of the 'Roe v. Wade' ruling last month, which recognized abortion as a constitutional right for women, many states have seen abortion clinics close.
