Gyeongbuk Office of Education Supports 'Visiting Dyslexia Learning Therapy'... Easing Reading Difficulties
Customized Support Based on Reading Characteristics... Preventing Learning Difficulties and Enhancing Learner Confidence
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gwiyeol] The Gyeongbuk Office of Education will implement a "Dyslexia Learning Therapy Support Visiting Schools" program starting this August for 20 elementary students experiencing difficulties with dyslexia and learning, in collaboration with specialized institutions.
'Dyslexia' refers to difficulties in accurate and rapid word recognition and decoding ability, characterized by reduced accuracy when reading words, inaccurate pronunciation during oral reading, slower reading speed compared to the student's grade level, and insufficient reading comprehension relative to the grade level.
The purpose of the "Dyslexia Learning Therapy Support Visiting Schools" program is to diagnose and prevent factors causing reading learning difficulties early, thereby boosting students' confidence in school life.
In particular, the program provides direct visits to schools or homes to support students in regions where it is difficult to receive support through specialized institutions and those urgently needing dyslexia learning therapy support.
The dyslexia learning therapy support process begins with a preliminary assessment using a dyslexia characteristic checklist and the Korean Oral Reading Assessment (KOLRA) tool for each student, followed by a customized individualized education program. Afterward, a post-improvement assessment is conducted along with in-depth interviews with the responsible teachers and parents to guide connected support measures.
Before launching this program, on July 21, a preliminary consultation meeting was held where officials from the provincial education office, schools, and specialized institutions gathered to share efficient support methods and roles for the target students.
The provincial education office plans to further strengthen activities linking the Basic Academic Skills Support Center, dedicated basic academic skills teachers, and external institutions to seek more effective support measures to resolve learning difficulties for students requiring learning support.
