Prime Minister Draghi appeared before the Senate that morning and announced his resignation. After finishing his speech, he plans to visit President Sergio Mattarella to submit his resignation letter. Since this is the second time he has expressed his intention to resign, it seems likely that the president will accept it.
If President Sergio Mattarella accepts the resignation, he will have to decide whether to appoint a new prime minister candidate and operate a caretaker cabinet until the scheduled general election in the first half of next year, or dissolve the parliament and hold an early general election in the fall.
In the local political scene, there is a growing atmosphere favoring an early general election due to the lack of suitable alternatives after the cabinet collapse. If the general election is held, late September or early October is considered likely.
Prime Minister Draghi submitted his resignation after the Five Star Movement, the largest party in the parliament, abstained from voting on the Senate’s livelihood support bill on the 14th. However, President Mattarella rejected the resignation, requesting that Draghi seek another judgment from the parliament. Accordingly, after appealing for full support in parliament the day before, Draghi nominally received a vote of confidence in the Senate with 95 votes in favor and 38 against.
