K-Movies Get Popular When Filmed in Gwangyang
Many Films Including Myeongryang, Extreme Job, and Busan Express Holding All-Time Box Office Top 1 and 2
Gwangyang Port Marine Park, International Passenger Terminal, and Gwangyang Maehwa Village Spotlighted as Filming Locations
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] Gwangyang City in Jeonnam announced that with the upcoming release of director Kim Han-min’s film Hansan generating high expectations, Gwangyang, the main filming location, is gaining attention alongside Myeongryang, the first film released in the Admiral Yi Sun-sin trilogy.
Myeongryang, released in 2014, created a massive naval battle set in Gwangyang and filmed over 70% of the movie there, attracting 17.61 million viewers and still holding the number one spot at the box office.
At Gwangyang Port Marine Park, photo zones and promotional panels feature Admiral Yi Sun-sin, Kurushima, characters from the film, behind-the-scenes stills, and key story elements.
The drug squad’s raid scene, considered one of the iconic moments in Extreme Job, which ranks second in all-time box office, was also filmed at Gwangyang Port.
In the large-scale action scene where 100 actors and stunt team members, including the five drug squad members, engaged in hand-to-hand combat, the stacked containers at Gwangyang Port left a strong impression on the audience.
Gwangyang Port, where the sunset paints the sky red and the graceful Yi Sun-sin Bridge can be viewed at its most beautiful, continues to attract young generations seeking leisurely romance.
The scene in Taxi Driver, ranked 16th at the box office, where German journalist J?rgen Hinzpeter passes through a security checkpoint, was filmed at Gwangyang Port International Passenger Terminal, and the zombie fight on the train to Busan in Train to Busan was shot at the Hwanggil Tunnel in Doidong.
Additionally, Gwangyang Maehwa Village, where spring arrives earliest, is also renowned as the filming location of Chihwaseon, which won director Im Kwon-taek the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002.
Moreover, Gwangyang continues to be spotlighted as a guaranteed hit filming location for movies such as The Technicians, Neighbor, and Gangnam 1970.
Kim Seongsu, head of the Tourism Division, said, “Gwangyang, with its beautiful natural scenery including Baegunsan Mountain, Seomjin River, and Gwangyang Port, as well as abundant industrial resources, serves as a diverse spatial backdrop for K-movies. Visitors to Gwangyang will enjoy the fun of discovering the city as seen in films.”
