"Only Residents Suffer from Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly Disruption" - Gyeongsilryeon Gyeonggi-do Association
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The Gyeonggi-do Council of the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice recently urged for politics of compromise and communication, criticizing the 'deadlock' surrounding the election of the chairperson of the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly as only causing harm to the residents.
On the 20th, the council released a statement titled "Position of the Gyeonggi-do Council of the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice on the Deadlock in the Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly," expressing regret that "the newly formed 11th Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly, established through the 8th local elections, is repeatedly deadlocked due to disputes over positions including the chairperson," and that "with both the Democratic Party and the People Power Party holding 78 seats each, neither side is yielding, resulting in continuous confrontation."
They continued, "The Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly was scheduled to elect the chairperson and vice-chairperson at the 1st plenary session (on the 12th), hold the standing committee chair elections at the 2nd plenary session (on the 19th), and conduct standing committee activities from the 20th to the 24th to review ordinances and an additional supplementary budget of 1.4 trillion won. However, due to the dispute over the chairperson positions between the two parties, the 2nd plenary session on the 19th could not even be convened," criticizing the situation.
In particular, they stated, "While the provincial assembly members, who should be taking care of the livelihoods of Gyeonggi residents, are caught up in party interests, support for the struggling working-class and small business owners is not being addressed, and the provincial executive branch is also unable to organize its structure and implement various policies and projects," urging that "the People Power Party and the Democratic Party stop further extreme confrontation and engage in politics of compromise and communication."
Earlier, the Gyeonggi Assembly, which opened on the 1st of this month, held only the 1st plenary session of the first extraordinary meeting at 11 a.m. on the 12th and has been unable to proceed with subsequent schedules. This is because the People Power Party and the Democratic Party, each holding 78 seats, have failed to narrow their differences over the formation of the assembly, including the method of electing the chairperson for the first and second halves of the term.
The People Power Party insists that the chairperson should be elected through elections for both the first and second halves of the term, whereas the Democratic Party argues that the chairperson position should alternate between the two parties in the first and second halves.
Meanwhile, some criticism has arisen over the fact that the 156 Gyeonggi Provincial Assembly members, who have not even formed the assembly and have entered a 'business suspension' after only five minutes of official legislative activity, were paid approximately 5.549 million won in legislative allowances for their first month in office on this day.
