Jeonnam National University Hospital Hosts Symposium Celebrating 700 Kidney Transplants and 100 Liver Transplants
Lecture and Discussion by Leading Experts in the Field of Organ Transplantation
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Organ Transplantation Center at Chonnam National University Hospital held the ‘700 Kidney Transplants and 100 Liver Transplants Commemorative Transplant Symposium’ on the afternoon of the 16th at the first-floor auditorium of the Biomedical Research Center.
According to Chonnam National University Hospital on the 18th, the symposium, co-hosted with the Korean Society for Transplantation, was attended by about 100 people including Hospital Director Ahn Young-geun, Korean Society for Transplantation President Kwon Oh-jung, Chairman Kim Myung-soo, Korea Organ Donation Agency (KODA) Director Moon In-sung, and Professor Joo Jae-kyun, Head of the Department of Surgery at Chonnam National University College of Medicine.
Reports on the achievements of 700 kidney transplants and 100 liver transplants at Chonnam National University Hospital were presented by Professors Lee Ho-kyun and Kim Hyo-shin of the Transplant Vascular Surgery Department. Afterwards, leading scholars and experts in the field of organ transplantation in Korea participated as chairpersons and speakers, delivering special lectures and lectures divided into three sessions: liver transplantation, kidney transplantation, and organ donation.
The special lecture was conducted by Professor Emeritus Jung Sang-young, the first director of the Organ Transplantation Center at Chonnam National University Hospital, with Professor Seo Kyung-seok of Seoul National University Hospital’s Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery presenting on the topic ‘From the Past to the Future of Liver Transplantation.’
In the liver transplantation session, presentations included ▲Professor Lee Kwang-woong of Seoul National University Hospital’s Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery on ‘Tips and Pitfalls of Laparoscopic Donor Hepatectomy’ and ▲Professor Lee Nam-joon of the same department on ‘Tips and Pitfalls in Hepatic Artery Anastomosis during Liver Transplantation.’
In the kidney transplantation session, presentations included ▲Professor Min Sang-il of Seoul National University Hospital’s Transplant Vascular Surgery Department on ‘Kidney Transplantation in the New Era of Robotic Surgery,’ ▲Professor Lee Sik of Jeonbuk National University Hospital’s Nephrology Department on ‘Strategies and Mechanisms to Prevent Sensitization during Blood Transfusion,’ and ▲Professor Park Jae-beom, Director of the Organ Transplantation Center at Samsung Seoul Hospital, on ‘The Latest Status of Xenotransplantation.’
In the organ donation session, chaired by Korea Organ and Tissue Donation Agency Director Moon In-sung and Jeonbuk National University Hospital Director and Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Transplant Vascular Surgery Professor Yoo Hee-chul, presentations and discussions were held including ▲Professor Lee Jae-myung of Korea University Anam Hospital’s Department of Critical Care Surgery on ‘Practical Issues of Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD) in Korea’ and ▲KODA Coordinator Kim Mi-young on ‘Strategies and Applied Cases of Chonnam National University Hospital to Promote Brain-Dead Organ Donation.’
Choi Su-jin-na, Director of the Organ Transplantation Center at Chonnam National University Hospital, said, “The number of transplant waiters has exceeded 40,000 annually, but donors are severely lacking, resulting in an average of 6.8 waiters dying each day without receiving transplant surgery,” adding, “We hope brain-dead organ donation will be further activated so that more transplant opportunities can be provided to patients, allowing them to enjoy a new life.”
Hospital Director Ahn Young-geun stated, “Chonnam National University Hospital has grown into the best regional base organ transplantation medical institution, having performed the first kidney transplant in the Honam and Chungcheong regions in 1987, the first liver transplant in 1996, and the first heart transplant in Gwangju and Jeonnam regions in 2018,” and added, “As the transplant team has grown through passion and dedication, we will continue to work together to become the nation’s top transplant center.”

Meanwhile, as of July, Chonnam National University Hospital has performed 718 kidney transplants, 118 liver transplants, and 12 heart transplants, the highest number in the Honam and Chungcheong regions, and has also managed 140 brain-dead donors.
