'The Second Heo Jun' Grows Up... Korea Ranks 2nd Overall in International Mathematical Olympiad
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] The "second generation of Heo Junis" are growing rapidly.
According to the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 16th, the Korean delegation won medals for all six students at the 63rd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Oslo, Norway, from the 6th for 11 days, ranking 2nd overall among countries.
Among 589 students from 104 countries, the Korean delegation won 3 gold medals and 3 silver medals, earning a total of 208 points. Choi Woo-jin (Seoul Science High School, Grade 2), who won a gold medal, scored 40 out of 42 points, achieving an excellent result by ranking 12th individually. Students Bae Jun-hwi (Seoul Science High School, Grade 2) and Lee Kyu-dong (Seoul Science High School, Grade 2) won gold medals for two consecutive years following the 2021 competition. Kim Dong-hyun (Seoul Science High School, Grade 3) won a silver medal this year after winning a bronze medal in the 2020 competition.
The competition was held over two days, the 11th and 12th, with three problems each day. A total of six problems were presented across various fields such as algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinatorics, each graded out of 7 points. This year, the difficulty level of the problems was somewhat lower compared to previous years. The cut-off scores for gold, silver, and bronze medals were set at 34, 29, and 23 points respectively, which were higher than in previous years.

Meanwhile, the International Mathematical Union (IMU) classified Korea as a Grade 5 country, the highest national mathematics grade, this year. This evaluation includes results from the International Mathematical Olympiad. Additionally, at the International Congress of Mathematicians held in Helsinki, Finland, on the 5th, the IMU awarded the Fields Medal to Heo Joon-i, a Korean-American professor at Princeton University and a distinguished professor at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study, marking the first time a Korean has received this honor. The Fields Medal is awarded to young mathematicians under the age of 40 who have made significant research achievements and is known as the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics."
