‘Pohang is the Optimal Site for Electric Fishing Boat Industry Development’ … Leading K-Battery
Policy Seminar on the Electric Fishing Vessel Industry Held at Korea Maritime Institute
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] A policy seminar to explore measures to revitalize the ‘electric fishing vessel industry’ was held on the 13th at the Korea Maritime Institute with Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok in attendance.
The policy seminar was attended by about 100 experts including Mayor Lee Kang-deok, National Assembly member Ahn Byung-gil, Korea Maritime Institute President Kim Jong-deok, International Electric Vehicle Expo Chairman Kim Dae-hwan, Small and Medium Shipbuilding Research Institute Director Jin Song-han, Ulsan TP Director Woo Hang-soo, and Pukyong National University Professor Wang Je-pil.
On this day, the experts agreed that in response to changing domestic and international conditions such as the 2050 carbon neutrality goal and discussions on fisheries subsidy regulations, the electric and hybrid fishing vessel industries should be fostered to revitalize shipbuilding and find new avenues for the fishing and shipbuilding industries.
Mayor Lee said, “With the global rise of climate change and carbon issues, demand for eco-friendly fishing vessels is expected to increase in the fisheries sector,” adding, “Pohang is advancing as a leading city in the battery industry through the Battery Regulation-Free Special Zone and large-scale investments by EcoPro, and it has the optimal location and infrastructure to foster the battery industry, including the electric fishing vessel industry.”
KMI Director Ko Dong-hoon said, “In domestic fishing, vessels older than 21 years account for 30% of the total fleet,” and emphasized, “In response to changing domestic and international conditions such as carbon neutrality and the abolition of fisheries subsidies, the electric and hybrid fishing vessel industries must be fostered.”
Korea Maritime Institute President Kim Jong-deok stated, “As domestic and international environmental regulations are being strengthened, it is time for Korea’s fisheries to fundamentally improve their structure into an eco-friendly industry,” and added, “If the electric fishing vessel market, which is just emerging, utilizes Korea’s excellent technological capabilities and industrial base, it can develop into a leading country.”
