[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jonghwa] KCC is actively pursuing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management for sustainable management by promoting eco-friendly paint products.

KCC is pushing for a transition to ESG cans that reduce paint packaging cans to 4-color printing. By applying 4-color printing, which is about half of the existing 8-coating specification, it is expected to have an eco-friendly effect by reducing the use of volatile organic solvents. Starting next month, the 18ℓ rectangular cans will first be converted to ESG cans with 4-color printing applied, and then the ESG cans for paint packaging will be gradually expanded to all products.

Recently, KCC signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Murim P&P to develop eco-friendly water-based paint applying new material nanocellulose. Nanocellulose is a substance obtained by processing wood into wood chips, then going through pulping to extract cellulose fibers from natural pulp, which are split into nanometer sizes. It weighs about one-fifth of iron but has five times greater strength and, above all, is biodegradable, making it a next-generation eco-friendly new material gaining attention recently. KCC is also leading the development of eco-friendly water-based paints such as Forest Putty Washable, low-temperature curing paint for electric vehicles, and water-based automotive repair paint 'Sumix,' expanding its lineup.

Eco-friendly water-based paints are also supported in social contribution projects. KCC has actively used eco-friendly water-based paints in social contribution activities such as the nationwide old house improvement project 'Saetteul Village,' the low-rise residential area improvement project in Seoul 'Ondongne Forest,' and the residential environment improvement project in Seocho-gu 'Firefly House.' Through this, it has enhanced its image as an eco-friendly company and improved recognition by expanding contact points with consumers.

A KCC official said, "We are expanding the lineup of eco-friendly water-based paint products closely related to the environment and hastening the introduction of ESG cans that consider eco-friendliness for product packaging cans. We will devote ourselves to research and development so that paint products can play a spearhead role in accelerating KCC's ESG management and expand to all products."
