Car Prices, Delivery Fees Rise and Charging Costs Increase... Consumer Burden '↑'
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] The burden on consumers is increasing as new car delivery fees and electric vehicle charging fees are rising.
According to the completed car industry on the 10th, delivery fees were raised by an average of about 9.6% across all sections starting from vehicles delivered on the 4th of this month. The company had informed each branch, dealership, and customers of this fact at the end of last month. The company explained that the increase is due to the sharp rise in international oil prices.
It is rare to adjust prices twice in less than half a year. Hyundai Motor and Kia had previously raised delivery fees by about 8.9% on average in February this year, about two years after the last increase at the end of 2019. Since fuel costs inevitably make up a large portion of delivery fees, the recent steep rise was reflected.
The company set the price using a fuel price linkage system so that delivery fees can be immediately adjusted according to the rise in oil prices starting this month. Accordingly, if the applied oil price rises or falls by 10% compared to the previously applied price, it is automatically reflected and adjusted in the delivery fee.
Along with this, electric vehicle charging fees are also expected to increase. The "Electric Vehicle Charging Fee Discount Special System," implemented by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and others in 2017 to expand electric vehicle adoption, ended last month. Additionally, KEPCO decided to raise the fuel cost linkage fee applied to electricity rates by 5 won per kWh starting this month. As a result, the charging fee, which was 292.9 won per kWh until last month, rose to 318.1 won.
In particular, the fuel cost adjustment unit price applied to electricity rates in the third quarter is also scheduled to increase from 0 won per kWh to 5 won per kWh. The burden of electricity usage on consumers is expected to increase further.
