Musical 'Richard III: The Story of the Mad King' Opens in August
2022 Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture Creative Activity Support Project Selected Work
Based on Shakespeare's Representative Play 'Richard III'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The musical "Richard III: The Story of the Mad King" will open this August.
This work is based on one of Shakespeare's early plays and explores the moments just before the death of Richard III, who is regarded as the most cruel and villainous figure, delving into his twisted perspective and inner deformity.
Although Richard III has been portrayed multiple times on the domestic theater stage, this production is distinguished by its incorporation of musical elements and modern imagination into themes such as usurpation, revenge, and sacrifice.
The work premiered after being selected for the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service's young artist support project "Korean Arts Creation Academy" under "Next Generation Battle 2019!" in 2020. It was later chosen for the 2022 Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture's artistic creation activity support project.
The production is directed by Jung Chansu, known for musicals "Ending Note" and "Therese Raquin," with composition and music direction by Han Hyeshin. Choreography director Park Yujeong, who worked on the premiere, also participates in the revival.
The role of Richard, the last king of the House of York in England, known as a hideous hunchback and ruthless villain, is played by Choi Hojung and Park Jeongwon.
The role of young Richard, filled with resentment and anger from being an outcast due to his physical disability since childhood, is performed by Kim Mingang, Kim Jiwoong, and Kim Younghyun. The boy, a free-spirited and honest childhood friend of Richard III, is portrayed by Kim Rihyun and Ryu Donghui.
The queen, who governs the animals and spirits of the forest and connects the pure young Richard and the boy, is played by Lee Taeun.
Additionally, six ensemble members?Kim Nakhyun, Na Jaeyeop, Seo Kyungsoo, Yoon Danwoo, Choi Hyunkyoo, and Hong Yujeong?will enrich the stage with new energy.
