[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] Hanmi Pharmaceutical announced on the 6th that it has newly launched 'Silliman Soft Capsules 140,' a liver function improvement agent containing silymarin, renewed as an over-the-counter drug using its independently developed 'microemulsion' formulation technology.

Silliman is a product that dramatically increases the absorption rate of the existing silymarin formulation, whose liver cell protective efficacy has been proven. Silymarin, a component that does not dissolve well in water, has a low absorption rate when administered orally, resulting in a bioavailability of about 20-40%.

Hanmi Pharmaceutical applied its proprietary microemulsion technology (SMEDDS) and contained 140 mg of silymarin, the active ingredient corresponding to 80% of the main component milk thistle 175 mg, in one capsule of Silliman. The microemulsion technology is Hanmi Pharmaceutical's unique technology that finely breaks down particles of substances, significantly increasing bioavailability (absorption rate) compared to general hard capsule formulations. Silliman showed more than twice the bioavailability compared to existing hard capsule formulations.

A Hanmi Pharmaceutical official said, "With the changes in social distancing policies, various gatherings have increased, and interest in liver health management is growing," adding, "Silliman, which greatly increases the absorption rate of silymarin, confirmed to be effective in protecting liver cells and improving liver function, is an over-the-counter drug that can help with toxic liver diseases due to decreased liver function before and after drinking, chronic hepatitis, and liver cirrhosis."
