Gwangju Police Promote Improvement of Traffic Safety Facilities in Line with Traffic Law Enforcement
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Gwangju Police is promoting improvements to traffic safety facilities in line with the enforcement of the Road Traffic Act, which strengthens pedestrian rights.
The Gwangju Police Agency and the Gwangju Autonomous Police Committee announced on the 6th that they will install stop line markings and safety signs at signal-free crosswalks within elementary school child protection zones.
In the first phase, installations are underway at 354 elementary schools, and later, signal-free crosswalk facilities will be reinforced in all protection zones, including kindergartens.
Signal-free crosswalks within elementary school child protection zones and crosswalks on right-turn slip roads (traffic islands) on general roads, where pedestrian protection is weak, will be replaced with raised crosswalks.
To inform citizens about the new law, the message "Stop at signal-free crosswalks in child protection zones" is being displayed on 35 VMS (Variable Message Signs), and various channels such as banner installations at 157 elementary schools and TBN traffic broadcast campaigns will be used for promotion.
A police official said, "We plan to continuously promote improvements to traffic safety facilities to establish a people-centered traffic culture instead of a vehicle-centered one," adding, "We expect traffic accidents in child protection zones to decrease through this amendment to the Road Traffic Act, and we urge drivers to drive safely."
