Ministry of Science and ICT and Ministry of National Defense to Train 50,000 Digital Talent by 2026
Training 1,000 Military Specialists in the Field of Science and Technology
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of National Defense are joining forces to cultivate digital talent. The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of National Defense plan to train 50,000 digital talents who will work in the industry after discharge by 2026. They will also nurture 1,000 military specialists in the field of science and technology.
On the 4th, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of National Defense announced that they held a 'Military Personnel Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Software (SW) Capability Enhancement' vision declaration ceremony at the Army 6th Division in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province.
The event was attended by Lee Jong-ho, Minister of Science and ICT; Lee Jong-seop, Minister of National Defense; and representatives from digital innovation companies such as Kakao Enterprise, Naver Cloud, KT, Amazon, Microsoft, and ELICE. The attendees commemorated the online AI and SW education for soldiers and the military-specialized AI professional education for officers, which are being promoted through collaboration between the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of National Defense, and declared the future vision of a 'Digital Talent Powerhouse and Science and Technology Strong Military' created through cooperation among the civilian, government, and military sectors.
To realize this vision, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of National Defense are promoting the 'Military Personnel Artificial Intelligence and Software Capability Enhancement' project, aiming to train 50,000 digital talents who will be active in the industry after discharge and 1,000 military specialists who will lead the science and technology strong military by 2026.
The Ministry of Science and ICT is conducting AI and software education for soldiers based on interactive and online methods tailored to the military environment. The Ministry of National Defense is providing military-specialized AI professional education for military officers at civilian AI graduate schools (Sungkyunkwan University and Chung-Ang University).
To ensure soldiers receive education in a good environment, they plan to improve educational infrastructure annually by establishing cafe-style training centers for pilot units, and to enhance the quality of education by matching pilot units with civilian digital innovation companies (sisterhood partnerships) to provide mentoring by current company employees and company site visits.
