Gwangju Superintendent of Education Lee Jeong-seon Announces Strategy to Improve Gwangju Students' Academic Performance
Presentation of Three Major Goals: Strengthening Student-Customized Basic Learning, Career Path, and Employment Competencies
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Lee Jeongseon, Superintendent of Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education, announced the promotion strategy for ‘Enhancing the Competence of Gwangju Students Embracing Diversity,’ which is both the No. 1 pledge and the first approved policy.
On the 4th, Superintendent Lee said, “The true future-oriented competence of Gwangju students is a creative convergence talent that combines humanistic character capabilities aiming for humanity, digital citizenship preparing for the 4th Industrial Revolution society, development of various special talents and aptitudes, along with basic academic skills.”
Within this concept, Superintendent Lee presented the vision of ‘Gwangju students opening the future with diverse competencies’ and set three major goals: ▲strengthening career, college admission, and employment capabilities through student-tailored basic learning ▲enhancing teaching capabilities to nurture creative convergence talents who will lead future society ▲strengthening administrative capabilities for symbiotic communication within the Gwangju education community.
As promotion tasks, the superintendent explained the creation of an ecosystem for competence enhancement as a common issue, competence improvement linking elementary and middle schools targeting elementary and middle school students, activation of career and college admission education for general high schools, and nurturing customized talents leading regional future industries for vocational high schools.
The core policy for creating an ecosystem for competence enhancement is the activation of reading education by introducing the Bitgoeul Recommended Books Certification System, and to strengthen digital citizenship in the AI era, the enhancement of education on the May 18 Democratic Movement and the development of teacher training programs will be carried out.
Additionally, an education-curriculum-class-evaluation system faithful to achievement standards will be established through the Gwangju-style class archive and class festival.
For the competence improvement plan linking elementary and middle schools targeting elementary and middle school students, the following will be promoted: ▲learning diagnosis and correction using AI learning systems ▲placement of dedicated basic academic teachers in elementary schools ▲expansion of support for learning assistant instructors at individual schools ▲placement of AI-dedicated teachers in middle schools ▲expansion of gifted education target students ▲production and distribution of career and academic design books for middle school students ▲development and operation of an online cyber learning counseling app (APP).
For general high schools, emphasis will be placed on activating career and college admission.
To this end, the student-centered elective curriculum will be expanded, general career and college admission expertise will be strengthened, and high school-university linked career and college admission programs will be expanded.
Detailed policies include opening small-group elective subjects centered on regional hub schools, enhancing the substance of school life records, additional placement of college admission support officers who are former university admission officers, expansion of career and college admission customized courses, and operation of career and college admission support research teams for grade 10, 11, and 12 department heads.
To strengthen student-tailored career and college admission education, a 24-hour career and college counseling service will be provided, a 365 study room will be established, and a teacher support group for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) will be operated.
Also, as an expansion plan for high school-university linked career and college admission programs, a career and college admission fair involving 130 universities nationwide will be held, a high school-university experience program with participation from 10 universities and over 80 items will be conducted, and requests will be made to the central government to expand regional talent selection and regional balance selection.
Finally, for vocational high schools’ competence enhancement, focusing on future industries, restructuring of departments in preparation for future industry demand, conversion and establishment of Gwangju-type Meister High Schools centered on future industries, operation of the Bitgoeul Student Technology Volunteer Group, expansion of AI field hub schools from 2 to 6, and establishment of the Bitgoeul Vocational Education Support Center will be implemented.
Furthermore, to build a talent nurturing cooperation system among the Office of Education, City Hall, related organizations, universities, and vocational high schools, a vocational education innovation district will also be operated.

Superintendent Lee stated, “We must create a new and innovative Gwangju competence embracing diversity suitable for the 4th Industrial Revolution era,” and added, “Based on the basic plan, we will establish more detailed execution plans that can be immediately applied by each institution and school, and necessary budgets will be reflected in the supplementary budget.”
