The UNIST rowing team won the overall championship in both the men's and women's college divisions at the "48th Jangbogo National Rowing Competition," held over two days on June 25 and 26 at the Seonakdong River rowing course in Busan, receiving two Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Awards. This continued the momentum from last year's 47th Jangbogo National Rowing Competition, where they also won the overall championship.
In particular, this victory is meaningful as it marks the first official tournament win since the establishment of the "Ulsan-UNIST Sports Club."
The Ulsan-UNIST Sports Club was formed in 2021 after being selected for the Korea Sports Council's "School-linked (single sport) Sports Club Project." The club contributes to the local community by operating citizen rowing experience classes on the Taehwa River and providing mentoring for middle and high school rowing students to promote rowing development in Ulsan.
The 48th Jangbogo National Rowing Competition was hosted by Busan City and the Korea Rowing Association, and organized by the Busan Rowing Association and Busan Port Authority.
The competition featured many skilled university rowing teams from across the country, including UNIST, DIGIST, Korea Maritime and Ocean University, Pukyong National University, Korea Naval Academy, and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, showcasing their talents.
The UNIST rowing team won first place in both the men's and women's teams in the eights (8+) event, known as the pinnacle of rowing. They also achieved victory in the men's coxed four (4+) event, and earned two silver medals and two bronze medals in individual and team events at the indoor rowing competition, culminating in the overall championship.
Kim Sooyong, captain of the UNIST rowing team and a sophomore in the Department of Management Science, said, "I was excited to compete in a proper tournament as the COVID-19 situation improved, and I am very grateful to my teammates who endured tough training together even during exam periods. We will prepare diligently for upcoming competitions and do our best to continue the golden wave."
Hanyangsang, Secretary General of the Ulsan-UNIST Sports Club, said, "I was amazed by the passion UNIST students have for rowing. Although we narrowly missed winning all the award categories this time, I am confident that if we continue like this, we will become one of the world's best university rowing teams, comparable to Oxford."
