Yeosu Coast Guard Conducts Basic Harbor Defense and Disaster Preparedness Training
Strengthening Integrated Defense Posture and Water Rescue Cooperation with Related Agencies through Actual Field Training
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Cheol-hoon] The Jeonnam Yeosu Maritime Police Agency announced on the 27th that “to protect important industrial facilities at Yeosu and Gwangyang ports and to strengthen cooperation with related agencies for maritime rescue, a basic training exercise for port security and disaster preparedness was conducted as if in a real situation.”
According to Yeosu Maritime Police, at around 2 p.m. on the 27th, a maritime police patrol vessel, Yeosu City Hall, Yeosu Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office, Yeosu Customs, the Navy 3rd Fleet, and the Army 95th Brigade participated in the exercise near the waters off Dunpyeongtan, Yeosu City. The training included port security and maritime terrorism response drills to prepare for unidentified vessel infiltration at Yeosu and Gwangyang ports, as well as basic disaster preparedness training simulating an explosion and fire on a hijacked oil tanker.
This training involved actual mobilization with eight patrol vessels and five vessels from related agencies. It began with port security drills to detect, track, and intercept suspected illegal immigrant vessels, followed by maritime counter-terrorism drills simulating terrorists hijacking an oil tanker, and concluded with basic disaster preparedness training simulating a rescue operation in response to an explosion and fire on the hijacked oil tanker.
In particular, this exercise maximized the effectiveness of joint civil, government, and military response training for unidentified vessels and maritime rescue by linking port security, counter-terrorism, and rescue scenarios during the simulated situations.
A Yeosu Maritime Police official stated, “Through continuous training with related agencies, we will maintain an integrated defense posture and strengthen cooperation for maritime rescue, enhancing our response capabilities in vulnerable waters with a seamless cooperative system.”
