Completion of the Construction Project for ‘Hwana-jeong,’ the Historic and Cultural Center of Old Sancheong
46 Billion KRW Invested in Rural Hub Revitalization Project
Healing Zones Including Anti-Aging Sandeulgil and Sugyejeong Walking Trails
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] The construction project of ‘Hwana-jeong (換鵝亭)’, a symbol of the scholar culture in the Sancheong area of Gyeongnam from over 620 years ago, has been completed.
On the morning of the 27th, Sancheong-gun held a completion ceremony at the site of Hwana-jeong in Sancheong Park behind the Sancheong County Office.
The ceremony, hosted by the Sancheong-eup Rural Hub Revitalization Project Residents' Committee, was attended by about 200 people including guests, related organizations, and local residents.
The Hwana-jeong construction project began in June last year and was completed in just over a year.
As part of the Sancheong-eup Rural Hub Revitalization Project, 4.6 billion KRW was invested to build it on a site of approximately 3,500㎡ at the top of Sancheong Park behind the government office.
Sancheong-gun expects that the newly built Hwana-jeong, which once served as the cultural center of the old Sancheong area, will play a symbolic role in promoting the excellence of Sancheong’s history and culture.
It is expected to become a resting and leisure space for residents, harmonizing with the ‘Anti-Aging Sandeul-gil’ trail that circles around Sancheong-eup offering views of the Gyeongho River, and the recently completed water system pavilion walking path.
The original Hwana-jeong was a pavilion built in 1395 by Sim Rin, the magistrate of Sancheong, with the support of the guesthouse of San-eum-hyeon. It was repeatedly destroyed and restored, but was lost to a fire in 1950.
Until it was completely destroyed by fire, Hwana-jeong was a symbolic pavilion representing Sancheong-gun as a hometown of scholars. According to old records, the signboard of Hwana-jeong bore the calligraphy of Han Seok-bong, Korea’s greatest calligrapher, but it is known to have been destroyed by Japanese invaders along with Hwana-jeong during the Jeongyu War in 1597.
At that time, Hwana-jeong was considered one of the three great pavilions of Yeongnam, along with Jinju’s Chokseokru and Miryang’s Yeongnamru, boasting beautiful scenery. Before its destruction by fire, more than 120 classical Chinese poems written by scholars from across the country were displayed there.
