LGU+ Declares 2050 Carbon Neutrality and 100% Transition to Renewable Energy
Establishing a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Roadmap According to SBTi 1.5°C Criteria
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] LG Uplus announced on the 26th that it held an ESG Committee meeting on the 24th and established a greenhouse gas reduction roadmap to convert 100% of its electricity consumption to renewable energy by 2050.
LG Uplus established this reduction roadmap to participate in ESG management and greenhouse gas reduction activities by converting 100% of its electricity usage to renewable energy by 2050.
First, to reduce emissions to the level of the international initiative 'Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)', it set an interim goal to convert about 53% of greenhouse gas emissions to renewable energy by 2030. Ultimately, by 2050, it plans to reduce 25% of the expected greenhouse gas emissions internally and use renewable energy for the remaining 75%.
To achieve this, LG Uplus is currently working on converting the Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) network to Fiber To The Home (FTTH) and is promoting cooling efficiency improvements in base stations and IDCs by expanding the installation of outdoor air cooling devices that replace air conditioners with outdoor air during winter.
LG Uplus plans to join the Korean RE100 (K-RE100) to concretize and spread this greenhouse gas reduction roadmap company-wide. K-RE100 is a campaign to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity usage to 'zero' through purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (REC), third-party power purchase agreements, equity investments in renewable energy power projects, and self-generation. Currently, 64 companies in Korea have declared K-RE100.
