Democratic Party Gwangju Branch Conducts Official Investigation on Two City Councilors Accused of Misconduct
"Actions Will Be Taken According to Party Constitution and Rules After Investigation Completion"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Metropolitan City Party of the Democratic Party of Korea has recently launched an ex officio investigation into two Gwangju city council members who have been accused of misconduct.
On the 23rd, the Democratic Party's Gwangju City Party announced that it would conduct an ex officio investigation to verify the facts of the allegations against the two council members and take action according to the party's constitution and regulations.
Recently, Councilor A of Gwangju was under investigation for bribery charges but left the country overseas and has been out of contact.
Initially, the police had been investigating Mr. B for business convenience-related reasons. During the investigation, they found circumstances involving Councilor A and planned to summon him for questioning, but Councilor A was already out of the country.
It is known that Councilor A left for the Philippines the day after Mr. B admitted to the facts during the police investigation.
On the 20th, Councilor C of Gwangju was sued by a former aide on charges including violation of the Labor Standards Act.
From February 21 to May 20, the former aide worked with Councilor Park and received 1.9 million KRW per month, which is below the minimum wage of 1,914,440 KRW per month based on 40 hours per week.
It was also pointed out that this amount was significantly less compared to what another private aide was receiving.
The Gwangju City Council consists of a total of 23 council members. However, there are officially only 12 aides, which means one aide per two council members.
Therefore, council members hire 11 private aides, maintaining a ratio of one aide per council member. The wages for private aides are reportedly divided equally from a pooled amount of 2.45 million KRW collected by the council members.
The former aide claimed, "Councilor C paid only 1.9 million KRW out of the 2.45 million KRW received as aide salary and embezzled the remaining amount."
In response, Councilor C explained, "Another aide who previously worked had a disease and shared the workload, so the salary was distributed accordingly. All of this was agreed upon."
