[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Lee Sung, the mayor of Guro District, has been inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member of the ‘Guro Heroes’.
Mayor Lee has led Guro for 12 years, from the 5th to the 7th term of direct elections. He served as the deputy mayor of Guro District for four years starting in 2002, and as mayor for 12 years from 2010, showing a deep connection and affection for Guro, striving to make it a happy and livable place for residents.
In particular, Mayor Lee has always wanted to help neighbors in need personally, beyond his official role as mayor. This intention early on translated into good deeds. Since 2010, he has consistently donated, contributing a total of about 45 million KRW to the Seoul Community Chest of Korea and the Guro District Scholarship Foundation up to March this year.
On the 22nd, upon being inducted into the Guro Heroes Hall of Fame, Mayor Lee expressed, “I am both pleased and humbled to receive this great award as I conclude my term. There are many people in Guro who quietly practice good deeds for neighbors in need. I believe I am receiving this on their behalf.”
On the same day, at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Seoul Gangjae (CEO Yoo Ja-yeol) and Jaeseung Steel (CEO Yoo Seon-yeol), who pledged donations of 50 million KRW by 2026, were also registered. The Yoo brothers, representatives of a construction rebar and steel material supply and distribution company located in Onsu-dong, have been steadily engaged in social contribution activities. In 2016, they became the first sibling members to join the ‘Honor Society’ of the Seoul Community Chest of Korea, a group of high-value donors contributing over 100 million KRW.
Mayor Lee said, “I sincerely thank the donors who have practiced precious sharing for neighbors in need,” adding, “I hope warm hands continue to reach out so that kindness overflows throughout Guro.”
Since 2016, Guro District has been conducting the ‘Guro Heroes Project’ to discover and honor high-value donors. In 2017, the ‘Guro Heroes Club’ was established to spread a culture of sharing and build a local welfare resource system. Individuals who donate or pledge 30 million KRW or more, and corporations or organizations who donate or pledge 50 million KRW or more, are enrolled as Guro Heroes members and have their names engraved in the Hall of Fame.
Yeongdeungpo District (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) announced that it will carry out a home repair support project for national veterans in the area in honor of the Month of Patriots and Veterans.
This project was prepared in connection with social contribution activities of private companies and the Seoul Yeongdeungpo District Self-Support Center to honor and improve the welfare of national veterans. Its purpose is to improve the living conditions of national veterans living in poor environments and help enhance their quality of life.
In particular, members of Yeongdeungpo District veterans’ organizations will directly participate in home repair volunteer activities, adding greater meaning to the project.
Home repair support targets national veterans aged 65 or older living in poor residential conditions. To this end, the district conducted a full survey in May of veterans needing support, and after on-site visits by welfare planners, prioritized 35 households based on economic vulnerability, old age, and mobility-limiting illnesses.
The selected households will be surveyed on-site by the Seoul Yeongdeungpo Self-Support Center to assess living conditions and improvement needs, followed by customized home repairs.
Support will include installing safety convenience devices such as safety bars, remote-controlled lighting, and anti-slip mats, as well as home environment improvements like wallpaper and flooring replacement. The project is planned to be completed by August.
A district official said, “Through this home repair project, we will look into and improve the difficult situations of national veterans so they can enjoy a happier life,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to provide proper respect and support to those who have devoted their bodies and minds for the country.”
Meanwhile, in celebration of the Month of Patriots and Veterans, the district provided free shuttle buses on June 6, Memorial Day, to facilitate the convenience of bereaved families attending memorial ceremonies at the National Daejeon Cemetery and National Seoul Cemetery.
Geumcheon District (Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon) announced that it will operate science creativity education at Geumcheon Science Cube to discover science prodigies and provide various future technology education in preparation for the 4th Industrial Revolution era.
The education will be conducted at Geumcheon Science Cube, the district’s science education hub facility.
Previously, Geumcheon District held a public contest targeting universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province for university-linked education. As a result, the Seoul National University of Education Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, Seoul National University Lifelong Education Institute, and Bucheon University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation were selected. Education will be conducted at Geumcheon Science Cube and the selected universities.
The science creativity education, jointly hosted by Geumcheon District Office and the Seoul National University of Education Science Gifted Education Institute, will be held 12 times from June 25 for elementary and middle school students selected through open recruitment, covering four subjects: artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, mathematics, and science.
Additionally, Bucheon University’s Department of Interior Architecture Design will conduct the ‘Kinetic Builder’ course six times starting July 21. ‘Kinetic Builder’ is a science-art convergence program that applies motion principles of architectural structures and mechanical energy principles to the design of space and form, incorporating mobility.
The recruitment fields are the ‘Kinetic Creative Structure Course’ (elementary level) and the ‘Kinetic Design Course’ (middle school level), with 20 students per field accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until July 15.
Also, Seoul National University Lifelong Education Institute plans to operate various customized programs from elementary students to adults starting in August, continuing from last year. Participants will be recruited online through the institute’s website.
Details on the science creativity education program and application methods can be found on the Geumcheon Science Cube website.
Geumcheon District expects to spread scientific culture by providing professional education programs through university-linked 4th Industrial Revolution-related education, laying the foundation for nurturing creative scientific talents.
