Gyeonggi-do Supports Independent Living Skills for People with Developmental Disabilities... First Introduction of 'Self-Help Groups' This Year
Support of 1 Million Won Each for Activity and Operating Expenses for 20 Self-Help Groups Over One Year
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province has selected and started supporting 20 self-help groups to participate in the activation project for self-help groups of people with developmental disabilities for the first time this year.
According to the province on the 22nd, through the Gyeonggi Developmental Disability Support Center, a public contest was held from May 17 to June 3, and out of 41 teams, a total of 20 teams were selected as support targets.
Each selected team (6 to 8 members) will receive 1 million won in activity and operating expenses for one year, holding self-help meetings at least once a month to promote various programs such as friendship and leisure activities, self-determination, control rights, and selective experiences.
The self-help groups for people with developmental disabilities is a policy newly introduced by the province this year to enhance social participation and independence capabilities.
The province plans to strengthen the expertise of self-help groups for people with developmental disabilities and foster practical independence capabilities through training for self-help group facilitators and administrative support.

The head of the Gyeonggi Province Disability Independence Support Division said, "A prejudice-free perspective from the local community toward people with developmental disabilities is necessary," adding, "We will continue to develop customized support projects and policies so that people with developmental disabilities themselves can plan and operate self-help groups."
