Another Question Error... No Correct Answer for June Mock Exam Earth Science II Question 14
No Issues Found in 30 out of 31 Items
Academic and Expert Review Concludes 'No Correct Answer'
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE) treated question 14 of Earth Science II in the June College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) mock exam as 'no correct answer.' Despite strengthening the objection handling procedures, errors in question setting occurred consecutively following last year's CSAT.
On the 21st, the institute finalized and announced the official answers reflecting the results of the objection review for the June mock exam. After announcing the provisional answers on the 9th, objections were accepted until the 12th.
A total of 68 objections were received, and excluding opinions unrelated to the correct answers or duplicates, 49 objections on 31 questions were actually reviewed. After consultations with academic societies and review by the objection review committee, 30 out of the 31 questions were judged as 'no issues.'
Question 14 of Earth Science II was judged as 'no correct answer' and all responses were accepted as correct. The question evaluated understanding of the characteristics appearing during the transition of ocean waves from deep-water waves to shallow-water waves.
The objection argued that statement ㄱ is false, and the only true statement is ㄴ, which is not among the choices, so the question should be treated as 'no correct answer.'
The institute explained, "It is scientifically valid to distinguish deep-water and shallow-water waves by the 'ratio of water depth to wavelength at a specific point,' and since statement ㄱ cannot be true, this question was decided as 'no correct answer.'"
The objection review preparation committee, consisting of three experts not involved in question setting (one professor and two teachers), classified the objection as a serious issue after reviewing the submissions.
Subsequently, consultations were requested from three professional academic societies?the Korean Society of Coastal Disaster Prevention, the Korean Earth Science Society, and the Korean Earth Science Education Society?and five external experts (three professors and two teachers). All three societies responded that statement ㄱ is false.
The objection review working committee, including five external experts and three academic society representatives, also decided on 'no correct answer.' This was because the truth of statement ㄱ depends on whether the wavelength used to distinguish deep-water and shallow-water waves is interpreted as 'the wavelength when the wave is generated in deep water' or 'the changed wavelength when it reaches a specific point.' Statement ㄱ cannot be true. The objection review committee also deliberated on the conclusion and confirmed 'no correct answer.'
The institute apologized deeply for causing concern to examinees and parents due to question errors arising from insufficient review during the June mock exam question setting process, stating, "We will carefully analyze the application of CSAT question setting and objection review system improvement measures during the question setting process and strive to ensure academic rigor and question completeness at every stage."

Last year, an objection was raised against question 20 of Life Science II in the CSAT, but the institute did not reflect minority opinions and treated the answer as correct, which led to strong backlash from examinees. Examinees filed a lawsuit for suspension of answer enforcement in court, resulting in an unprecedented suspension decision, delaying score announcements and postponing the announcement schedule for early admission results.
