Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Surpass 3 Million Eco-Friendly Vehicle Sales
[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Hyundai Motor and Kia's cumulative sales of eco-friendly vehicles have surpassed 3 million units in 14 years. According to the company on the 19th, since launching the Sonata and K5 hybrids in 2009, they have sold 3,006,414 eco-friendly vehicles as of last month. Eco-friendly vehicles refer to hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.
During the eco-friendly vehicle sales period, the company's total vehicle sales reached 93.09 million units. The share of eco-friendly vehicles stands at about 3.2%. The eco-friendly vehicle share remained in the 1% range in the past but rose to 3.5% in 2017, 5.1% in 2019, and last year reached double digits (11%) for the first time. This year, it has increased further to 14.6%.

Among the eco-friendly vehicles sold so far, hybrids account for about 1.87 million units, making up 62%. Electric vehicles account for 790,000 units, or 26%, and plug-in hybrids about 310,000 units, or 11%. The best-selling eco-friendly vehicle model is the Kia Niro Hybrid, with 480,000 units sold. Among electric vehicles, the Hyundai Kona Electric leads with 220,000 units sold.
