National Disaster Safety Research Institute Provides Summer Season Surface 'Heat Distribution Maps' to Local Governments
Preparing for Heatwaves in Our Neighborhood's Hot Areas with Scientific Data
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 16th that it will provide the ‘heat distribution map’ developed by analyzing meteorological observation data from the summer of 2021, the second hottest on record, to local governments nationwide in order to respond scientifically to heatwaves.
Central government agencies and local governments can use the ‘heat distribution map’ to help select optimal locations for installing heatwave mitigation facilities such as shade shelters and cooling foggers. This enables the establishment of customized heatwave countermeasures tailored to each region. Additionally, by integrating data on heat-concentrated areas with information on cooling shelters and vulnerable disaster groups held by local governments, it is expected that heatwave response services necessary for those areas can be provided.
Furthermore, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to support the multifaceted use of detailed ‘heat distribution maps’ in spatial policy projects such as urban development and urban regeneration.
Meanwhile, anyone can check the hottest areas in their neighborhood last year on the Life Safety Map website, and public institutions can also verify this information through the Ministry’s internal operating system (platform) ‘Big Data Insight.’

Lee Jong-seol, Director of the National Disaster Safety Research Institute at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said, “The ‘heat distribution map’ provided this time is data that all administrative and public institutions can utilize to support local governments’ scientific heatwave policies,” and “We will continue to develop and provide various research models for data-driven scientific disaster management.”
