Gokseong-gun, Low-Carbon Organic Rice Farming with Pot Seedling Transplanting is the Best

[Asia Economy] Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that on the 14th, it held a demonstration event for pot seedling transplanting at the organic cultivation natural farming complex in Guwon-ri, Gokseong-eup to ensure stable production of eco-friendly rice.

At the demonstration event, guidance on pot seedling transplanting technology was provided along with a live demonstration.

A demonstration of no-tillage rice planting using pot seedlings without plowing the paddy field was also conducted.

About 30 people, including farmers participating in the pilot project, related officials, and company representatives, attended the event, showing great interest.

Pot seedling transplanting technology is known as the most suitable farming method for eco-friendly rice cultivation.

This method involves sowing 2 to 3 rice seeds in a pot (a small pot for growing rice seedlings) using a pot-specific seeder and growing them into seedlings about 35 to 40 days old (25 to 30 cm) before transplanting.

Compared to broadcast seeding in seedling boxes, pot seedling transplanting produces larger and sturdier seedlings, which is advantageous for eco-friendly cultivation.

Additionally, since water can be applied deeply, it is highly effective for weed control.

Pot seedling transplanting technology also has significant effects on yield.

Because the roots are not cut during transplanting, they take root quickly, resulting in vigorous early growth.

As a result, the yield increases, stems become thicker, making the plants resistant to pests, diseases, and lodging, and it reduces the use of growing medium by about 50% and seeds by about 70% compared to broadcast seeding.

Recently, interest in no-tillage transplanting using pot seedlings has increased due to the government's carbon neutrality policy and the application of low-carbon rice cultivation technology.

To achieve low-carbon no-tillage cultivation, the use of large agricultural machinery must be reduced.

For this, pot seedling transplanting is suitable because it involves not plowing the paddy field, applying water two months in advance, and introducing golden apple snails early to control weeds.

An official from the county stated, “As a pilot project to establish a foundation for eco-friendly rice cultivation, we are promoting the creation of one cultivation complex (25ha) using pot seedlings this year. Through pot seedling transplanting, a farming method suitable for eco-friendly rice cultivation, we will steadily promote eco-friendly agriculture and gradually expand low-carbon rice cultivation technology.”
