The British daily The Guardian recently reported that a second heatwave this year has struck Spain and southern France, with high temperatures expected to continue through July and August.
The French Meteorological Agency reported that Mediterranean temperatures along the border between Spain and southern France have exceeded 35 degrees Celsius, with temperatures in the southwestern Mediterranean and the Rh?ne Valley in southeastern France expected to rise to 39 degrees Celsius this week. Additionally, temperatures in Paris are forecasted to reach 35 degrees Celsius.
In Spain, last weekend saw a heatwave with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius in Seville and nearby C?rdoba, and up to 42 degrees Celsius in the Guadiana Valley of Extremadura.
The Spanish Meteorological Agency stated that while temperatures usually rise significantly in June, this early high-temperature phenomenon is the first since 1981.
Spain and France also recorded record-high temperatures in May. In particular, southern France experienced temperatures up to 38 degrees Celsius, about 17 degrees higher than last year.
The United States is also experiencing an expansion of heatwave areas. According to the Associated Press, U.S. meteorological authorities have issued heat advisories and warnings for the southeastern U.S. Gulf Coast, the Great Lakes, and eastern Carolina, advising 17.5 million residents to avoid going outside and to stay indoors.
The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) stated that this heatwave is pushing temperatures to their peak in the western and southwestern U.S., spreading inland through Denver, Colorado, and extending to the Great Lakes and the eastern coastal regions over the weekend.
