[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency will operate a period for the prevention and eradication of elder abuse from June 15, Elder Abuse Prevention Day, until July 30.
According to the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency, Gyeongnam has entered an aged society with 18.3% of the total population being elderly.
With the increase in the elderly population, reports of elder abuse in the province have also increased annually, with 251 cases in 2019, 305 cases in 2020, and 440 cases in 2021.
During the elder abuse prevention and eradication period, the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency plans to improve awareness of elder abuse and actively inform the public about reporting methods through posting banners in public places and promoting on SNS.
They also plan to provide education for mandatory reporters of elder abuse under the Elderly Welfare Act, such as workers at elderly welfare facilities.
The Gyeongnam Police stated that they will promptly detect and protect victims of elder abuse while responding strictly to related cases.
For elderly individuals who find voluntary recovery difficult, they plan to provide multifaceted support in cooperation with specialized elder protection agencies.
A police official said, “Protecting victims of elder abuse who may be fighting alone in indifference requires the attention of all of us,” and added, “We will strongly respond to elder abuse cases and strive for victim recovery and prevention of recurrence through continuous follow-up management.”
