Gyeonggi-do Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters, Special Fire Investigation on 'Piloti Structures'
116 Pilotis Structures in Northern Gyeonggi Area from June 14 to 28
[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] The Gyeonggi Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters has announced a special fire safety inspection for pilotis structures in northern Gyeonggi Province following repeated fires in such structures.
The Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters plans to inspect 116 pilotis structures across 10 cities and counties in northern Gyeonggi from the 14th to the 28th, over a two-week period.
The inspection will focus on ▲whether fire safety managers are properly performing their duties ▲whether fire safety facilities are functioning normally ▲the maintenance status of evacuation and fire prevention facilities ▲and the use of unauthorized hazardous materials.
If violations are found, measures will be taken according to relevant laws, and guidance will be provided for any deficiencies.
According to the Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters, pilotis structures are prone to rapid fire spread to upper floors due to their characteristics.
In the past five years, there have been a total of 18 fires in pilotis structures in northern Gyeonggi, resulting in 20 casualties (1 death and 19 injuries).
The main causes identified include 10 cases of negligence, 5 electrical causes, 1 mechanical cause, and 2 others.
Since evacuation is difficult, regular checks on the operation of fire safety facilities and maintenance of evacuation routes are important.
Go Deok-geun, head of the Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters, stated, "Fires in pilotis structures occur repeatedly every year, and since such fires can cause many casualties, focused inspections are necessary."
