According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales network on the 13th, 'Crime City 2' (directed by Lee Sang-yong) attracted 817,035 viewers over the weekend (May 10-12), securing the number one spot at the box office. Since its release on April 18, the film's cumulative audience has reached 10,503,886.
'Crime City 2' is a crime action film about detective Ma Seok-do (Ma Dong-seok) and the Geumcheon Police Department's violent crimes unit pursuing the strongest villain Kang Hae-sang (Son Seok-gu), who dominates the Vietnam area. On the afternoon of May 11, it became the 28th film in history to reach 10 million viewers, the first to do so since the pandemic, and the 20th Korean film to achieve this milestone. Additionally, it surpassed the final audience count of 'Parasite' (directed by Bong Joon-ho, 2019), which had 10,313,201 viewers, becoming the highest-grossing film released in May.
Through the distributor, planner and actor Ma Dong-seok said, "During the long pandemic period, many expected that theaters would lose vitality and that no film would reach 10 million viewers anymore, so I am happy to have pleasantly surpassed 10 million. I sincerely thank the audience who saved Korean cinema."
In second place was 'Broker' (directed by Kore-eda Hirokazu), which won the Best Actor award at the 75th Cannes Film Festival (Song Kang-ho), attracting 515,374 viewers. Since its release on May 8, it has gathered 773,367 viewers, surpassing the cumulative audience of Kore-eda's highest-grossing film 'Shoplifters' (2018), which had about 170,000 viewers.
In third place was 'Jurassic World: Dominion' with 316,158 viewers, followed by the animated film 'Pok?mon the Movie: Diamond & Pearl?Giratina and the Sky Warrior' with 121,222 viewers in fourth place.
The documentary film 'You Are My Country' ranked fifth, while 'After Yang' and '237' took eighth and ninth places respectively.

The total number of moviegoers over the weekend was 1,817,722. With the endemic theater scene reviving, major summer releases such as 'Top Gun: Maverick' and 'The Witch: Part 2' are leading the way, followed by 'Hansan: Rising Dragon' (directed by Kim Han-min), 'Alienoid' Part 1 (directed by Choi Dong-hoon), and 'Emergency Declaration' (directed by Han Jae-rim), promising to heat up the box office once again.
