ZennCell Selected for Government Project to Develop Functional Ingredients for Mental Health Promotion
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] ZenenCell, an antiviral drug development company, announced on the 9th that it has been selected as an institution to carry out the agricultural science and technology research and development project led by the Rural Development Administration.
As part of the research on standardization of production and quality of horticultural special resources, the project aims to cultivate native plants for immune enhancement and mental health promotion and improve their efficacy.
The project is led by the Special Crop Utilization Division of the Rural Development Administration, with ZenenCell, Kyung Hee University, Ajou University, and Chonnam National University forming a consortium as joint research institutions. The ZenenCell consortium will receive 2.8 billion KRW in research funding from the government over five years until 2026 to develop functional raw materials that can help improve mental health. The research will focus on native plants aimed at improving cognitive ability and sleep quality within mental health.
Kim Tae-woo, head of ZenenCell’s business division and the research director, said, "The goal is to analyze the components and functions of resource materials through government project research, obtain individual recognition of functional raw materials from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and commercialize products." He added, "Depending on the research results, the development of pharmaceuticals using these raw materials can also be pursued."

ZenenCell researches about 2,000 species of native Korean plants and develops new drugs and health functional foods based on them. Currently, clinical trials for shingles and COVID-19 treatments are underway using candidate substances derived from Dambalsu. They have also obtained individual recognition approval for a functional raw material made from Centella asiatica extract powder for improving eye health.
