Samsung Heavy Industries, together with ABS, designed an ammonia fuel-powered container ship of the "Neo-Panamax" class (12,000 to 16,999 TEU) through technical research on ammonia fuel tank specifications, optimal arrangement, fuel supply, and ventilation systems.
Samsung Heavy Industries also obtained basic certification for the design of an ammonia-ready liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered container ship jointly developed with France's GTT and the British Lloyd's Register (LR) classification society.
Ammonia is one of the eco-friendly ship fuels in the shipbuilding and shipping industries. It emits no carbon dioxide during combustion and is relatively easy to supply, store, transport, and handle.
Since 2019, Samsung Heavy Industries has been continuously developing ammonia fuel-powered ship technology in collaboration with classification societies, shipping companies, and engine manufacturers. Last year, it obtained basic design classification certification for an ammonia fuel-powered Aframax (A-Max) crude oil tanker.
