[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The National Archives of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 9th that it held the '2022 Records Day' commemorative ceremony at the National Archives auditorium in celebration of Records Day.
'Records Day' was established as a national legal holiday in South Korea to promote global awareness of the importance of records, based on June 9th, World Records Day, designated by the International Council on Archives (ICA). This year marks the third anniversary of the observance.
This commemorative event was held under the theme "Preparing the Nation's Tomorrow with Records," with over 400 guests and records officials attending both onsite and online, including Lee Sang-min, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Kim In-geol, Chairman of the National Institute of Korean History, and Kwak Geon-hong, Chairman of the National Records Management Committee. The event included the screening of congratulatory video messages from various sectors, a commemorative speech by Minister Lee Sang-min, awards for distinguished records management contributors, celebratory performances, and a special lecture. The ceremony was broadcast live on the National Archives' YouTube channel (RecordON).
At the awards ceremony for distinguished contributors to national records management, Minister Lee Sang-min praised and expressed gratitude to individuals and organizations who contributed to the development of records management and the spread of records culture. During the ceremony, the National Medal was awarded to Cho Jin-tae, Executive Director of the 5·18 Memorial Foundation, for his efforts in investigating and collecting records related to the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement and providing public services, which contributed to the inscription of these records as a UNESCO Memory of the World.
Meanwhile, South Korea holds 16 UNESCO-designated Memory of the World records, ranking fourth worldwide in the number of Memory of the World holdings, making it a strong nation in records heritage.
