[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City announced on the 9th that Yuhan-Kimberly has been selected as the grand prize winner of the 'Seoul Metropolitan Government Environmental Award' this year. Yuhan-Kimberly received high praise for reducing carbon emissions and plastic use throughout the entire product manufacturing process and practicing environmental management for carbon neutrality.
In addition, Seoul City selected a total of 20 awardees, including grand prizes and excellence awards, across five categories: green technology, energy transition, environmental management, resource circulation, and climate action. The awards ceremony will be held on the 10th at the multipurpose hall on the 8th floor of Seoul City Hall. The 'Seoul Metropolitan Government Environmental Award,' established in 1997, is the most prestigious environmental award in Seoul, recognizing citizens, companies, and organizations that have contributed to creating a carbon-neutral city by 2050 in cooperation with citizens.
The grand prizes were awarded to Kim Ji-hyo in the green technology category, Lotte Engineering & Construction in energy transition, Lotte Chemical in environmental management, Starbucks Korea in resource circulation, and the Korea LOHAS Association in climate action. Kim Ji-hyo provided a service that simultaneously measures electricity consumption and renewable energy generation, delivering production and consumption data in real-time through various communication methods, allowing customers to monitor usage changes. She also introduced various new energy technologies into public policies, such as a virtual net metering platform that enables consumption of jointly constructed solar power without installing individual solar panels, contributing to the spread of energy self-sufficiency.
Lotte Engineering & Construction, responsible for the development and operation of Lotte World Tower and Mall, designed the buildings as eco-friendly structures with energy consumption at 56% of that of general buildings, receiving the 'LEED GOLD' certification, one of the green building certification systems, for the first time among Korea’s supertall buildings. Over the past three years, they invested 3 billion KRW to enhance building energy efficiency by introducing renewable energy production facilities such as water source and geothermal energy, implementing a hay energy management system, recycling air conditioner condensate water, and operating PET bottle collection robots.
Furthermore, Lotte Chemical installed a total of 24 AI-based collection machines for waste plastics at major marts and convenience stores within Seoul, Starbucks Korea is participating in the 'Zero Waste Seoul' project aiming for full adoption of reusable cups by 2025, and the Korea LOHAS Association hosted events such as the Campus Green Index GQ Enhancement Energy League, Campus Green On Leader event, Smart Waste Separation Green Campus initiative, Single-use Plastic Diet Challenge with youth, and the 2022 Seoul Earth Day event.
