Jeonnam National University Celebrates 70th Anniversary with a Grand Festival Event
Memorial Ceremony Held at Minju Maru on the 8th at 5 PM
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Chonnam National University is holding a grand festival to celebrate its 70th anniversary of establishment and 113 years since its founding.
On the 8th at 5 p.m., Chonnam National University announced on the 7th that it will hold a commemorative ceremony at Minju Maru attended by about 300 people including invited guests, faculty and staff, students, and alumni. The ceremony will also be broadcast through the Metaverse virtual campus and YouTube.
Also, the ceremony will invite regional lawmakers including the chairman of the National Assembly Education Committee, metropolitan and provincial governors and superintendents of education from Gwangju and Jeonnam, presidents of flagship national universities, and presidents of universities in the Gwangju-Jeonnam region.
At the university, former presidents including President Jeong Seong-taek, former presidents including Jo Seong-hee, president of the alumni association, the faculty council, deans of colleges and graduate schools, appointed professors, and heads of various campus organizations such as the public officials' union will attend.
In particular, congratulatory videos from presidents of about 10 foreign universities including National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, La Rochelle Business School in France, and University of Bayreuth in Germany will be screened at the ceremony.
At the ceremony, the Huguang Academic Award (Democracy, Human Rights, and Peace field) will be awarded to Honorary Professor Usumi Aiko, the Yongbongin Honor Award to Lee Seok-ro, director of Koramtola Hospital in Bangladesh, and awards will be given to 12 proud alumni of Chonnam National University, along with the Yongbong Academic Award, Excellent Academic Researcher Award, and commendations for faculty and staff.
Along with this, as part of the 'Gwangju-Jeonnam Reads and Talks' project, the '2022 One Book' selected by local residents' votes will be announced, and a 'Future Declaration' promising the development and prosperity of Chonnam National University for the next 100 years will be held.
Following the ceremony, at 6:40 p.m., the Yongjigwan Convention Hall will host 'Yongbongin Night,' inviting alumni active in various social sectors and major donors to showcase the development of their alma mater.
In particular, this event will include a congratulatory party for alumni elected in local elections, awards for proud Chonnam National University alumni, and free presentations of awardees' impressions, promising to be a grand festival.
Earlier at 2 p.m., students, alumni, and faculty and staff will participate in the quiz program 'Challenge! Green Bell,' themed on the university's history, receiving generous prizes and creating a harmonious festival. At 3:30 p.m., Naver Corporation will receive the newly established Future and Creative Development field award of the Huguang Academic Award.
Chonnam National University was launched in 1952 with the newly established College of Engineering, along with Gwangju Agricultural School (1909), Mokpo Commercial School (1920), Gwangju Medical Specialized School (1944), and private Daeseong University (1948), marking its 70th anniversary this year.

Based on the oldest predecessor school, it has a founding history of 113 years. Meanwhile, it merged with Yeosu University, which originated from Yeosu Public Simple Fisheries School (1917), in 2006.
