A Village School is a community learning center voluntarily created by local residents to support student care and after-school programs.
Now in its third year, the Gyeongbuk Future Education District (Gyeongju, Andong, Sangju, Uiseong, Yecheon) Village Schools started with 8 locations in 2020, and this year, 12 additional locations have been added: 2 in Uiseong, 1 in Sangju, 4 in Yecheon, and 5 in Gyeongju, bringing the total to 41 Village Schools in operation.
Village Schools involve about 200 village teachers with expertise (individuals who provide and support village education curricula and care for local students) participating in various educational activities such as ▲village care ▲after-school study rooms (supporting the resolution of basic academic gaps) ▲youth autonomy project support ▲emotional support through culture, arts, ecology, environment, humanities, reading, and play ▲operation of school-linked village curricula ▲basic academic learning and care outside school including career and history, actively creating community learning centers.
In the Uiseong Future Education District, a legal foundation has been established for stable and sustainable operation of the project, and the 'Uiseong Future Education Support Center' intermediate support organization is being operated. Discussions on intermediate support organizations are also planned in other future education districts such as Yecheon.
In the five future education districts, village textbooks such as the 'Dahamseong Village School (Uiseong Future Education Support Center),' which introduces local cultural heritage and experience sites together with teacher clubs and local residents, and the hometown exploration workbook 'Shall We Go Together? (Sangju Office of Education)' are being produced and used for hometown education activities.
Within the Gyeongju Future Education District, the 'Seonggeon Village Care School (Gyeongju Korean Community Center)' plans to operate after-school programs such as Korean language classes and basic math from July to support the early social adaptation and growth of children of Korean compatriots in the old downtown area.
Kim Sangdeok, planner of the 'Kkureogi Village School' in the Sangju Future Education District, said, "Receiving budget and facility support from the Office of Education and local government is a blessing for students," and added, "Literacy education that started in schools is continuously being carried out in village schools, showing great results."
