Human Rights Commission Begins Investigation into Kim Eo-jun's 'Ms. Kim Geon-hee' Title Human Rights Violation Complaint
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Human Rights Commission has launched an investigation into whether broadcaster Kim Eo-jun's use of the term 'Kim Geon-hee-ssi' constitutes a human rights violation.
According to a summary of Asia Economy's coverage on the 7th, the complaint submitted by the Rule of Law Restoration Action Alliance was recently assigned to the Human Rights Violation Investigation Division. Typically, when a complaint is filed, the Human Rights Commission conducts a preliminary investigation and decides whether to assign the case based on whether it falls under the scope of investigation according to the Human Rights Commission Act. The Human Rights Violation Investigation Division will investigate the complaint and examine whether Kim's remark on the broadcast on the 30th of last month, referring to First Lady Kim Geon-hee as 'Kim Geon-hee-ssi,' infringes on personal rights.
Earlier, on the 3rd, Lee Jong-dae, head of the Legal Rights Solidarity, filed a complaint with the Human Rights Commission, claiming that Kim's use of 'Kim Geon-hee-ssi' to refer to the First Lady constitutes a human rights violation. Lee argued at the time, "Unlike referring to First Ladies Kim Jung-sook or Kwon Yang-sook, Kim's use of 'Kim Geon-hee-ssi' for the First Lady carries an intention to belittle and disregard her."
