Ministry of the Interior and Safety Prevents Flood Damage through Thorough Pre-Inspection of Drainage Pump Stations
Nationwide Simultaneous Operation Drill of 2,306 Drainage Pump Stations to Prepare for Heavy Rainfall
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 7th that it will conduct a nationwide simultaneous operation drill of 2,306 drainage pump stations on the 8th to prevent flood damage caused by heavy rains during the monsoon season.
Drainage pump stations are critical disaster prevention facilities that are promptly operated to induce artificial drainage when river flooding or urban area inundation is expected due to heavy rains or high tides. In particular, even a slight delay in operation time can cause casualties and property damage, so they must be thoroughly inspected regularly and maintained in a constant state of readiness.
Prior to the simultaneous operation drill on the 8th, the Ministry completed preliminary inspections of key equipment, such as situation dissemination and equipment operation status, by each agency from May 25 to June 7. In the drill led by the Ministry, the entire process will be conducted as if in a real situation, from on-site response by personnel to verifying the normal operation of the drainage pump stations under the assumption of heavy rain. Additionally, locations where recent flood damage has occurred near drainage pump stations will be selected as sample targets for on-site inspections. If repairs or reinforcements are needed based on the drill results, minor issues will be corrected immediately on-site, and matters requiring more time will be completed before the rainy season.

Kim Seong-ho, Director of the Disaster Safety Management Headquarters, said, “To minimize damage from natural disasters such as heavy rain and typhoons, preparation in advance is most important.” He added, “Through this drill, we will maintain a readiness posture so that drainage pump stations can be immediately operated even during sudden heavy rains, and we will do our best to protect the precious lives and property of the people.”
