The Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency announced that it held a roundtable meeting with safety executives from 16 construction companies at Biz Hub in Jung-gu, Seoul, to promote the on-site establishment of the Serious Accident Punishment Act and reduce fatal accidents.
This roundtable was organized to review the autonomous establishment and implementation status of safety and health management systems by construction companies since the enforcement of the Act and to discuss ways to strengthen on-site operability.
At the meeting, safety executives from construction companies reached a consensus that an organic role between headquarters and sites is important to reduce fatal accidents through the establishment of safety and health management systems.
They also agreed that headquarters should establish procedures for identifying and improving risk factors and provide resources, while sites should take practical measures to improve risk factors.
Director Ahn Jong-joo of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency said, "To reduce industrial accident fatalities, it is important to protect workers' lives at construction sites, which account for more than half of fatal accidents."
Director Ahn added, "The core point of the Serious Accident Punishment Act, which is being fully enforced this year, is that management responsibility centers on establishing a safety and health management system tailored to the characteristics of construction companies, and to check and inspect at least once every six months whether the site is properly operating and make improvements."
