Gyeongnam Police Agency: "Will Investigate According to Procedures Regardless of Election Outcome"... 107 Election Crime Cases, 152 People
Prohibition of Providing Money or Gifts for Congratulations, Consolation, or Return Gifts After Election Day
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 2nd that it is investigating election-related offenses in connection with the 8th nationwide local elections held simultaneously.
According to the police agency, there are a total of 107 cases involving 152 people related to the June local elections, with investigations concluded for 13 cases involving 15 people: 6 referred to prosecution, 4 not referred, and 5 closed before indictment. Currently, 94 cases involving 137 people are under investigation.
The investigation leads were 68 cases from complaints, accusations, and petitions; 15 cases from intelligence; 13 cases from reports; and 11 cases from investigation requests, in that order.
By type, 32.9% involved spreading false information, 28.9% involved bribery charges, 10.5% involved election interference by public officials, 7.9% involved violations related to polling methods, and 5.3% involved damage to posters and banners.
There was also one case each of establishing a similar institution, violation of election office installation, violation of intra-party primary regulations, and three cases of disturbances at early voting stations.
Since January, the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency, including the provincial police headquarters and 24 police stations in the province, has operated an election offense investigation situation room to maintain a 24-hour response system and formed a dedicated investigation team of 264 officers to conduct crackdowns.
A police agency official said, “From the reporting stage, we cooperated organically with the local election commission and conducted investigations with a fair and neutral attitude.”
The Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency plans to proceed with investigations according to procedures regardless of election results by the statute of limitations deadline for election offenses on December 1.

They also plan to collect intelligence and crack down on acts of providing money or goods under the pretexts of congratulations, consolation, or return gifts after election day.
