POSCO Completes Construction of 4th Research Building at Gwangyang Automotive Materials Research Center
Improvement of Cramped and Overcrowded Work Environments, Expected Enhancement of R&D Focus
Application of Modular Construction Method, Achieving Shortened Construction Time and Reduced Carbon Emissions
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] POSCO announced on the 31st that it has completed the construction of the 4th Research Building at the Gwangyang Automotive Materials Research Center, creating a pleasant and efficient working environment.
The POSCO Automotive Materials Research Center has played a pivotal role in helping the Gwangyang Steelworks become the world's largest automotive steel sheet production plant, based on specialized and efficient development of automotive steel sheet production and processing technologies.
POSCO Technical Research Institute completed the construction of the new research building over about six months since groundbreaking in November last year, and held a plaque ceremony to wish for the sustainable growth of the 100-year-old POSCO Group.
The newly completed 4th Research Building is expected to significantly improve research efficiency by expanding the cramped research space to enhance the working environment for researchers and rearranging experimental equipment.
The 4th Research Building, which will be used by about 50 researchers from POSCO Low Carbon Process Research Institute and Steel Research Institute in Gwangyang, is a two-story building equipped with five laboratories, four conference rooms, a creativity room, a lobby, and a lounge.
In particular, the 4th Research Building is significant as the first case in Korea to apply modular construction methods to a large office building.
POSCO Technical Research Institute applied POSCO A&C's modular construction method, shortening the construction period by two months compared to traditional building methods using reinforced concrete.
Through this, they were able to reduce costs and cut carbon emissions by 126 tons, equivalent to 19,500 pine trees, greatly enhancing eco-friendliness.
Lee Dae-sung, leader of the Gwangyang Common Testing Section at POSCO Automotive Materials Research Center, said, "With the completion of the 4th Research Building, researchers will be able to work in a more comfortable environment," and added, "We will continue to do our best to ensure POSCO's sustainable growth based on steady research achievements."
Meanwhile, during the construction period of the 4th Research Building, based on POSCO A&C's self-safety management and the Technical Research Institute's safety guardian activities, the project achieved zero accidents with over 6,000 personnel involved.
