D-1 Before the June 1 Local Elections... Excitement of Cable TV Vote-Counting Broadcast
Live Vote Counting Broadcast... Some YouTube Channels Also Simultaneously Air
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] On the eve of the June 1 local elections, competition among cable TV regional channels for election result broadcasts is heating up.
According to the industry on the 31st, LG HelloVision has prepared election broadcasts with differentiated formats by broadcast region under the slogan "Vision 2022, Hope for the Region!" throughout the election period. On election day, they plan to deliver the atmosphere on-site by connecting the counting centers and battleground candidate camps through three-dimensional election broadcasts using an integrated newsroom and dual broadcasts linking open studios. They will also provide customized regional election trend analysis with experts familiar with local issues.
SK Broadband, under the catchphrase "Your Vote on June 1! Changing Our Region," arranged opportunities for all candidates within the broadcast region to appear on programs such as a debate inviting candidates for Busan City Superintendent of Education and Jeollabuk-do Superintendent of Education, and individual interviews with Incheon mayoral candidates titled "City Diagnosis Issue Touch." They also conducted joint campaigns with local election commissions to encourage voter participation. On election day tomorrow, they will conduct live broadcasts from the counting broadcast site, covering from the start to the end of voting.
HCN, incorporated into the KT Group, operated a special election coverage team centered on a media strategy task force (TF) directly under the CEO for this local election. The special coverage teams by region responded swiftly to local election issues, receiving evaluations that communication and information provision with local voters became more active. HCN also conducted the "first-ever" exclusive cable broadcast independent public opinion poll in this election. On election day, they will conduct live evening broadcasts for the vote counting.
Delive, the largest regional cable TV in the metropolitan area, used the catchphrase "The Region's Choice, Together with Delive" and delivered preliminary candidate status, primary election status, and candidate pledge analysis for each electoral district through the "June 1 Local Election Situation Room" segment. They held interviews inviting candidates for 15 district offices in Seoul and conducted on-site interviews meeting 28 candidates for mayor and county head in 14 areas of Gyeonggi Province. On voting day, they will provide information such as vote counts through live vote counting broadcasts.
CMB set a strategy to faithfully provide information tailored to regional channels. They aired special planned reports on electoral district issues and local matters, candidate invitation debates, career broadcasts, and candidate speeches. They also planned voter hope messages. CMB, which has been simultaneously broadcasting on TV and YouTube live streams, plans to provide live vote counting broadcasts and subtitles showing election results by region starting at 7 p.m. for Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong areas, and 8 p.m. for Gwangju and Jeonnam regions on election day.
Seogyeong Broadcasting, which achieved a record-high viewership rating of 14.76% in the 2018 local election vote counting broadcast, also produced "2022 Choice-WHOterview" this year and broadcast it on regional channels and YouTube. Covering six cities and counties in western Gyeongnam, Seogyeong Broadcasting visited candidates' homes in battleground areas to easily convey their daily lives and pledges. They also held debates and interviews involving all candidates in the region. For the vote counting broadcast, they deployed relay vehicles and LTE equipment at all counting centers to deliver real-time on-site news.
JCN Ulsan Central Broadcasting focused on free candidate speech broadcasts. Responding to criticism that there is relatively little interest in metropolitan basic councilors, they produced and aired 2-minute free speech broadcasts. A total of 93 candidates, including 46 metropolitan council candidates and 47 basic council candidates, participated in the speech broadcasts. On election day, they will provide live broadcasts from 7 p.m. until the end of vote counting through regional channels and YouTube.
Lee Rae-woon, chairman of the Korea Cable TV Broadcasting Association, said, "This nationwide local election had especially many agendas that voters needed to pay attention to, including regional issues," and added, "Cable TV regional channels did their best to provide diverse qualitative and quantitative information, from candidate career broadcasts to independent public opinion polls."
