Kim emphasized, "In October 2013, my eldest son, who was battling illness, passed away at the age of 27. Suddenly becoming an only son, my second son enlisted in 2015 and served in the 51st Division located in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, completing his 21-month service term."
Regarding the controversy over his second son's dual nationality, he explained, "My second son, born in the U.S. while I was studying for my doctoral degree, is a dual national under South Korean law," emphasizing that he voluntarily enlisted in the South Korean military.
