South Korea Appointed as Inaugural Chair... Secretariat Established at H2Korea
Park Il-jun, Vice Minister of Industry, "Hydrogen is a 'Game Changer'... Expecting International Cooperation"
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Lee Jun-hyung] The "Global Hydrogen Avengers," consisting of 18 countries including South Korea and the United States, has been launched. The aim is to accelerate the establishment of a hydrogen industry ecosystem by strengthening private sector cooperation among member countries.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that Deputy Minister Park Il-jun attended the "Global Hydrogen Industry Alliance (GHIAA) Forum" on the 25th. Hydrogen associations from 18 countries including South Korea, the United States, and the United Kingdom launched the Global Hydrogen Industry Alliance at the forum. The forum was attended by Deputy Minister Park, Moon Jae-do, Chairman of the Hydrogen Convergence Alliance (H2KOREA), and representatives from hydrogen associations of 17 other countries.
The Global Hydrogen Industry Alliance is an international coalition of hydrogen associations led by South Korea. Its goal is to strengthen private sector hydrogen cooperation on an international level. Previously, the Hydrogen Convergence Alliance had promoted the launch of the Global Hydrogen Industry Alliance after 14 countries’ hydrogen associations signed a joint letter of intent during the "Hydrogen Mobility Show" in September last year.
This is why South Korea was appointed as the inaugural chair country of the alliance at the founding general meeting held that day. Additionally, the alliance decided to establish its secretariat within the Hydrogen Convergence Alliance. The Hydrogen Convergence Alliance plans to hold regular meetings to build not only a hydrogen sector network but also a data hub. It also presented plans to act as a bridge between governments and companies to strengthen international cooperation on policies, regulations, and technology development.

Major national hydrogen associations attending the forum, including those from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany, presented their domestic hydrogen policies and industry status. The United States plans to invest $9.5 billion (approximately 12 trillion KRW) in the hydrogen sector through infrastructure investment legislation. The United Kingdom is doubling its low-carbon hydrogen production plan from the existing 5GW to 10GW. The UK government recently established a hydrogen fund worth ?240 million (approximately 380 billion KRW).
The acceleration of establishing hydrogen funds is not limited to the UK. The German hydrogen association announced the creation of the "H2 Global" fund worth €900 million (approximately 1.22 trillion KRW). Germany also plans to build an international hydrogen trading market mechanism through government subsidies.
Deputy Minister Park also explained South Korea’s hydrogen policy. He stated plans to diversify clean hydrogen energy sources to include solar power, nuclear power, and natural gas, and to establish large-scale hydrogen production bases domestically and internationally. The government will establish global clean hydrogen certification standards and significantly expand the installation of integrated hydrogen refueling stations.
Deputy Minister Park said, "Hydrogen, a key means for carbon neutrality, will play the role of a 'game changer' in the era of energy transition," adding, "We hope that through the alliance, international cooperation will be strengthened to respond to the global energy market crisis and climate change."
