UAE Powerbroker Muhammad Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Elected as Next President
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the de facto ruler of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, has been elected as the next president.
On the 14th (local time), according to the UAE state-run WAM news agency, the UAE Federal Supreme Council announced that it made this decision at a meeting presided over by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and ruler of Dubai.
Crown Prince Mohammed has effectively taken on the leadership role since 2014, after Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president, suffered a stroke. Crown Prince Mohammed is the half-brother of President Khalifa.

President Khalifa passed away the day before at the age of 73. He was the eldest son of Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE, and was appointed the second president in 2004, succeeding his father.
