Institute for International Economic Policy Establishes Economic Security Strategy Office... Supporting Yoon Administration's National Tasks
[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Kim Hyewon] The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) is undertaking an organizational restructuring to support the core national agenda of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration, including the establishment of an Economic Security Strategy Office.
KIEP announced on the 15th that it will implement an organizational restructuring as of the 16th to strengthen economic security, a major risk factor in the external economic environment, and to support the Yoon administration’s national agenda of "proactively promoting economic security and strengthening supply chains."
KIEP expanded its existing Economic Security Task Force (TF) to establish the Economic Security Strategy Office, which comprises the Economic Security Team, the Unification and International Cooperation Team, and the Global Strategy Team. KIEP explained the purpose as "strengthening the central role of economic security research by managing external risks related to economic security and establishing proactive response measures, as well as making comprehensive efforts to successfully implement the national agenda."
KIEP had previously expanded and reorganized the TF formed in 2019 in response to Japan’s export controls on Korea, and established the Economic Security TF last October. Earlier this year, it launched the Economic Security Research Group composed of external economic experts, followed by the inauguration of the Economic Security Advisory Committee made up of external experts last month.
Additionally, KIEP reorganized the World Area Studies Center into a team-based system, linking regional experts with specialists in international macro-finance, trade and commerce, economic security, and international development cooperation in a matrix-style platform. This aims to support not only in-depth analysis of current issues but also mid- to long-term national agendas.
