40s Chinese Man Detained for Assault with Road Curb Leading to Citizen's Death
Change of charge from murder to robbery-murder
Also found to be in violation of the Immigration Control Act
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A man in his 40s of Chinese nationality, who assaulted a stranger with a road curb (curbstone) causing death, is now facing detention.
On the 13th, the Guro Police Station in Seoul announced that they have applied for an arrest warrant against Mr. A, a Chinese man in his 40s, on charges of robbery-murder, assault, and violation of the Immigration Control Act.
The pre-arrest suspect interrogation (warrant hearing) will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Seoul Southern District Court.
Mr. A was apprehended by the police on suspicion of assaulting a victim in his 60s in front of a park in Guro-gu around 6 a.m. today, resulting in the victim’s death.
According to the police, Mr. A kicked the victim and also swung broken curbstones from the surroundings at the victim’s face.
After the crime, Mr. A fled but was caught in the act after committing another assault.
Police investigations confirmed that Mr. A assaulted the victim and then robbed money and valuables, leading the police to change the charge from murder to robbery-murder.
Additionally, the police found that Mr. A also violated the Immigration Control Act. However, the police explained that Mr. A is not an illegal immigrant.

Earlier, Mr. A tested positive for methamphetamine in a simple drug screening test. However, since the detailed test results from the National Forensic Service have not yet been released, the police did not apply drug-related charges.
