Eight Cases of Norovirus Food Poisoning Reported at Daycare Centers in Gyeonggi-do
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province announced that eight cases of norovirus outbreaks have been confirmed so far this year in daycare centers and kindergartens within the province, urging compliance with personal hygiene and infection prevention and management guidelines.
According to the Infectious Disease Control Support Group of Gyeonggi Province on the 13th, there have been 10 cases of waterborne and foodborne infectious disease outbreaks in daycare centers and kindergartens in the province, of which eight were confirmed as norovirus infections. The remaining two cases are under investigation.
Norovirus is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water, contact with infected patients, and droplet or contact infection via secretions (vomit, feces, etc.). It is highly contagious and prone to secondary infections. Major clinical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, muscle pain, headache, fatigue, and mild fever. Typically, gastroenteritis symptoms last for 24 to 72 hours.
Norovirus is generally known to occur frequently from November to April, but infections can be confirmed throughout the year.
The Infectious Disease Control Support Group explained that the number of confirmed norovirus outbreak cases was higher than usual due to increased awareness of infectious disease reporting following the COVID-19 pandemic last year and increased indoor activities among young children due to social distancing.
The Support Group listed proper handwashing habits, safe food consumption, safe food preparation, cleaning and disinfecting contaminated surfaces, and thorough laundry management as methods of infection prevention.
