[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] It is expected that former Gangnam District Council Chairman Jo Seong-myeong (56) will be confirmed as the People Power Party's candidate for Gangnam District Mayor.
The People Power Party's Supreme Council reached a consensus on the morning of the 12th to strategically nominate former Gangnam District Council Chairman Jo Seong-myeong as the candidate for Gangnam District Mayor in the June 1 local elections.
Accordingly, the Supreme Council plans to hold a meeting on the morning of the 13th to officially confirm and announce former Chairman Jo Seong-myeong as the candidate for Gangnam District Mayor.
Previously, former Gangnam District Health Center Director Seo Myeong-ok won first place in the second primary, defeating former National Assembly member Lee Eun-jae. However, Lee filed an objection with the central party and a complaint with the Gangnam Police Station, alleging that Seo sent text messages to responsible party members during the primary that may have violated election laws.
As a result, the Supreme Council decided to strategically nominate a third candidate instead of Seo and Lee, and it is reported that they reached a consensus to strategically nominate former District Council Chairman Jo Seong-myeong.
Former Chairman Jo served as a first-term member of the Gangnam District Council from 2010 to 2014 and was recognized as a politically capable figure, having served as chairman during the first half of his term. In particular, Jo is known as a local politician with a harmonious personality and is said to have considerable financial resources.
Gangnam District Office employees are reportedly on alert as the candidate for district mayor changed suddenly overnight.
A Gangnam District official said, "The candidate for district mayor changed back and forth over several days, causing confusion among employees," and added, "Since the consensus is forming around former Chairman Jo Seong-myeong, who is known for his harmonious personality, employees are feeling relieved."
