[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] CJ CheilJedang announced on the 11th that it has started mass production of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), a marine biodegradable plastic material.
CJ CheilJedang began mass production of PHA at its Pasuruan biofactory in Indonesia. This facility can produce 5,000 tons of amorphous PHA (aPHA) annually, and construction of a production line for semi-crystalline PHA (scPHA) has also commenced. CJ CheilJedang plans to increase PHA production to 65,000 tons per year by 2025.
PHA is a polymer substance accumulated inside cells by microorganisms that consume plant-derived components. It has the characteristic of decomposing in various environments including soil and marine settings, and is especially used as a key raw material for eco-friendly plastic products because it biodegrades 100% in seawater.
Along with the start of PHA mass production, CJ CheilJedang also launched 'PHACT,' a specialized brand for biodegradable materials. The name combines PHA and 'Act,' reflecting the company's commitment to "leading a paradigm shift in the eco-friendly biodegradable material market through PHA," according to the company.
CJ CheilJedang views the market outlook positively as regulations encouraging the reduction of petrochemical plastics and the use of eco-friendly raw materials are increasing, especially in developed countries. The global biodegradable plastics market size is expected to grow from approximately 5 trillion KRW last year to about 16 trillion KRW by 2025.

A CJ CheilJedang official stated, “Even before full-scale production, contracts exceeding 5,000 tons have been secured mainly with major global clients, confirming high demand,” and added, “We will contribute to creating an environment where consumers worldwide can use sustainable eco-friendly plastics in their daily lives.”
